District 16 & Section 2 Baseball Scores

July 20, 2009
Major Baseball Crescenta Valley 6 Encino 9 in 7 innings
10/11 Baseball Crescenta Valley 6 Quartz Hills 7

A pair of local District 16 champion All-Star Baseball teams suffered tough losses Monday night in their respective Section 2 Tournaments, resulting in their seasons coming to a close.
In a Major baseball contest, Crescenta Valley was handed a 9-6 loss by Encino in seven innings at Scholl Canyon Ball Fields. Both teams were held scoreless for two innings, although Kevin Hello led off the game with a double. In the top of the third, Encino went ahead on a solo Home Run.  Crescenta Valley,  in the bottom of the third, scored twice on a double by Nathan Cook and a single by Kevin Hello, who scored on a pass ball.  In the bottom of the 5th , with two runners on Anders Simmeth tripled, then Will Lombardo hit a Home Run to give Crescenta Valley a 6 to 1 lead.  However, Encino scored three on a Home Run to close the score to 4 to 6.  In top of the sixth, another Home Run by Encino tied the game 6 to 6 .  In the seventh, again it was a three run Home Run that did Crescenta Valley in.  Crescenta Valley was able to get the first two runners on base in the bottom of the seventh, but the Encino’s pitcher was able to strikeout the next two batter and forced the last batter to ground out to end Crescenta Valley’s season. 10/11 Baseball
Crescenta Valley fell to Quartz Hill, 7-6, in an elimination game of the 10-11 Division in the Antelope Valley. Crescenta Valley scored two runs in the top of the sixth to take a 6-5 lead, but Quartz Hill rallied to score twice in its half of the inning to move on to the championship game today.
Nico Tellache drove in a run with a single to knot the game at 5 before Justin Rountree gave Crescenta Valley a 6-5 lead on a fielder’s choice. (Glendale News Press)

Major Baseball Crescenta Valley 4 Quarts Hills (Dist 51) 7
Crescenta Valley’s Kyle Tavizon and Christian Castaneda both had solo home runs, which was not enough to overcome Quartz Hill’s lead.  Will Lombardo RBI double in the 3rd closed the score to 3 to 2, but that’s as close they would get.  Quartz Hill went long ball to score 2 more runs in the 5th.  Anders Simmeth singled in the 5th.  Quartz Hill scored two more runs in the top of the 6th.  Castaneda led off the bottom of the sixth with a triple and came home on Zach Burch Home Run to make the score 7 to 4, but two quick outs ended the game. Long ball leads CV to title victory
Baseball: Three home runs power Crescenta Valley to 8-6 win in District 16 championship.

Published: Last Updated Tuesday, July 14, 2009 10:31 PM PDT
NORTHEAST GLENDALE — The Crescenta Valley and Burbank Little League teams were living by the long ball Tuesday in the District 16 Major Baseball championship game.
Eleven of the first 14 runs in the game came off of six home runs, as balls were being rocketed out of Babe Herman Field.
And that was just through four innings.
Although the teams split in the homer department, Crescenta Valley was able to score more runs off its dingers, as it downed Burbank, 8-6.
The win avenges a 5-3 Crescenta Valley loss Monday against the same Burbank squad.
“I had a feeling it was going to be a home-run fest,” Crescenta Valley Coach Todd Erickson said. “I felt it in my bones. These are two good teams with good hitters.”
Burbank Coach Jim Noud said he also expected a high-scoring game.
“That’s what I thought it was going to be,” he said. “I figured they would score at least eight runs, I was just hoping that we were going to be able to keep up with them.”
The win puts Crescenta Valley into the Section 2 Tournament, where it will play at 10 a.m. Saturday against the District 51 champion at Scholl Canyon Park.
Burbank put the pressure on early, as Aidan Anding led off the game with a single and was brought home on a two-run home run by Justin Lewis.
But Crescenta Valley quickly responded in its half of the first, as Jacob Martinez blasted a three-run home run, scoring Kyle Tavizon and Christian Castaneda.

Crescenta Valley added to its lead in the second on a two-run double by Mike Reilly.
After another two-run dinger by Lewis in the third, Anding was able to knot the score at 5 with a home run in the fourth inning.
But the champs fought back again in their portion of the inning, as Tavizon hit a two-run homer and Castaneda delivered a solo shot.
“I think it was those two homers that really gave us the momentum,” Erickson said.
“We have played Burbank three times in the tournament, and all three have been tough games. I take my hat off to them, they really came to play.”
Burbank tacked on a run in the fifth.
Tavizon was three for four with a home run, two runs batted in and two runs scored and Martinez was two for three with three RBI and two runs scored.

CV rallies late for crown
Baseball: Local All-Stars get nine runs in last two innings to win 10-11-year-old title.
By Charles Rich

TUJUNGA — For the first four innings, the Crescenta Valley 10-11 All-Star Baseball team couldn’t buy a hit.
It’s a good thing Crescenta Valley had two more innings available to reverse that trend. Crescenta Valley couldn’t have waited for a more opportune time to do so.
Crescenta Valley busted out of its cocoon by scoring nine runs in the final two innings to secure a 9-4 victory against Tujunga on Tuesday night in the District 16 Little League All-Stars Tournament at Tujunga Little League Fields.
Crescenta Valley, which outscored its opponents, 24-4, in the three-game tournament, will next face the District 51 champion in an opening-round game of the Section 2 Tournament at 6 p.m. Saturday at Rosamond Little League Field in the Antelope Valley.
Crescenta Valley’s bats began to blaze in the top of the fifth inning, which saw it push across six runs to take a 6-3 lead.

“Like every good team, we knew that we would have a battle on our hands,” said Crescenta Valley Coach Tony Tellache, whose team began the tournament Thursday with a 6-0 win against Tujunga before coming through with a 9-0 victory against Burbank on Saturday to send it to the championship contest. “I told them that we had to be there in the sixth because I thought we’d be tied going into the fifth.
“Our boys came through from top to bottom. We’ve been here before, so we knew we were going to have to stay patient [with the bats]. We knew that if we could play defense, it would pay off in the end and then our bats would be there.”
Indeed they were.
Loman Dunning reached base safely to start the fifth for Crescenta Valley. Colin Davidson was then hit by a pitch before Colin Martin broke up Tujunga starting pitcher Marlon Rizo’s no-hit bid with a bunt single to load the bases. Crescenta Valley made it 3-1 on a fielder’s choice that chased Rizo.
A wild pitch made it 3-2 before Greg Stupakis knotted the game at three with a single to right. Crescenta Valley took a 4-3 lead on a bases-loaded walk by Nico Tellache and Justin Rountree delivered a two-ruin single to extend the lead to 6-3.
Crescenta Valley pushed across two more runs in the sixth to make it 9-4, capped by a run-scoring grounder by Tellache.
Jonathan Tyler came within one out of pitching a complete game for Crescenta Valley, but was removed because he reached the tournament-imposed 85-pitch count. The right-hander struck out six before Andres Kim got the final out on a strikeout.
“You have to believe in the team and think we’ll get some hits,” Tyler said. “When we scored those runs [in the fifth], I just knew that I had to go out there by staying fresh and getting batters out.
“I felt pretty good in having control of my pitches. It means everything to me that we could win because I’ve been waiting a long time.”

9/10 Baseball Crescenta Valley 1 Vaquero 2
Vaquero ended the CV 9-10 boys post season last night by a score of 2-1.  In what was eerily reminiscent of the first loss to the Vaquero team, CV immediately walked two runners to start the game, and Vaquero followed up with two hits to score them.  Vaquero remained scoreless the rest of the game but their defense swallowed up a flurry of hits from CV and kept CV down to just one run. It was a good run guys - enjoy the rest of your summer and we will see you in Fall Ball!  (John Giese)
Crescenta Valley just could not overcome the first inning lead by Vaquero, Jason Chang had a single in the second inning.  See all of the details of the game by clicking on the link below. (whp)
Locals win first title
Baseball: Vaquero advances to Section 2 playoffs for first time with win over Crescenta Valley.
By Gabriel Rizk
Published: Last Updated Tuesday, July 14, 2009 10:31 PM PDT
NORTHEAST GLENDALE — For the first time in the 12-year history of the District 16 9-10 Baseball All-Star Tournament, the Vaquero All-Stars will be the district’s representative in the Section 2 playoffs.
Vaquero had to fight off a determined Crescenta Valley All-Star squad, which beat Vaquero on Monday to force an “if-necessary” championship game, but emerged victorious over CV, 2-1, on Tuesday behind timely early offense and another strong outing from starting pitcher Gio Ceballos.
The young lefty allowed just one run on five hits over 4 2/3 innings before yielding to David Piedra, who recorded a hitless four-out save.
“They played a helluva game, they just fought to the end,” Vaquero Coach Juan Piedra said of Crescenta Valley, which kept its championship hopes alive with an 8-6 win on Monday. “Our defense was good and Gio, our ace pitcher, was just really hot today and David just closed it. You’ve gotta appreciate what those two kids can do.”
Tuesday’s game bore some similarities to the teams’ meeting on Friday, in which Vaquero failed to score after the first inning, but made an early three-run lead stand up for a 3-2 win and a championship berth behind Ceballos and David Piedra.
Once again, Vaquero did its damage early on Tuesday, with two runs in the bottom of the first, an inning that could have been even bigger for Vaquero had it not run into two outs on the base paths.
Ceballos was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, but was gunned down trying to steal second base. Daniel Gonzalez then worked a four-pitch walk and was moved to third base on a double to left field by Piedra.
Cleanup hitter Orlando Diaz singled to shortstop to drive in Gonzalez and advance Piedra and went to second base himself on an error. Piedra scored the team’s second run on a close play at the plate following a wild pitch to batter Javier Hurtado, but Diaz made the second out trying to do the very same thing two pitches later on an equally close call at the dish.
Vaquero would get just four more singles the rest of the game against Crescenta Valley starter Max Meyer and couldn’t push across an insurance run.

But Ceballos pitched to contact and fell back on the range and accuracy of his infielders to thwart Crescenta Valley’s own attempts to rally.
Crescenta Valley’s opening inning started with a leadoff single by Adrian Damla, but ended on two calmly turned fielder’s choice putouts at second base and a ball fielded deep in the hole at shortstop. In the second inning, Vaquero worked around another leadoff hit with an inning-ending double play on a fly ball.
“This was a classic case of defense wins ballgames,” Crescenta Valley Coach John Geise said. “We hit the ball all over the field and their defense grabbed it and threw us out.
“I couldn’t ask my boys to do anything different than what they did. ...A couple inches this way or that and it could have been a different ballgame, but it wasn’t.”
Crescenta Valley’s lone run came in the top of the fourth, when Jake Whisenant beat out an infield single to lead things off and scored on a high chopper over third base by Frank Alsamman.

Junior Baseball Crescenta Valley 18 Burbank 23
Crescenta Valley scored 3 touchdowns but missed the extra points, while Burbank scored 3 TDs and a safety to win 23 to 18.  (whp)
The Crescenta Valley junior baseball team entered their Tuesday night elimination bracket re-mach against the Burbank all-stars with a potent offense and high hopes, with no one expecting a football game to break-out.  But at the end of the night, the Burbank all-stars prevailed in a 23-17, 3 hour and 50 minute game!  Bryan Wang started on he mound for CV and was able to hold Burbank in check while the CV boys built a 4-0 lead, through 1 1/2 innings, off of Burbank's starting pitching.  But Wang tired in the third inning and CV brought in Ted Boeke to try and close the door on the Burbank team.  With bases loaded Boeke was able to record the last outs of the inning, but not before Burbank crawled back into the lead 6-4.  Offensively, both CV and Burbank continued to trade runs throughout the game, and CVs boys never gave up at the plate.  Boeke delivered a 2-out double to right field, with bases loaded, for 3 RBIs, Josh Jun hit a screaming triple down the left field line that tallied 3 more runs and Johnny Yentch, Brett Feehan, Ken Lim, Joe Torres all picked up key hits and scored runs for the CV team.  When Boeke ran out of pitches in the bottom of the sixth inning, he was relieved by Christofher Rivera.  Burbank was able to bat around the line-up that inning and took what proved to be a decisive 9 run lead into the seventh.  But the never say-die CV boys came out for the top of the 7th inning and made the game just a little more interesting on Christofher Rivera's two-out three-run home run to deep centerfield.  The highlight home run was the last of the fireworks however as the game ended at 9:50pm (just before lights out) and the CV boys were left saying, "just wait till next year..." Crescenta Valley plays for all the marbles tonight, as they forced Vaquero into an “if necessary game.  Brain Erickson started for Crescenta Valley going 2 innings before being replaced by Jason Chang (who was the winning pitcher). Frank Alsamman came in the bottom of the sixth to finish the game.  For all of the other details of the game click on the Glendale News Press link below:

Baseball: CV forces if-necessary final with 8-6 win against Vaquero at Babe Herman.
By Grant Gordon
Published: Last Updated Tuesday, July 14, 2009 10:32 AM PDT
NORTHEAST GLENDALE — With both the Crescenta Valley 9-10 All-Stars and their Vaquero counterparts showcasing their mettle throughout Monday evening’s District 16 9-10 All-Star championship game, Crescenta Valley second baseman Jake Whisenant did what he could with both bat and glove to end the back-and-forth dramatics.
Six at-bats after Whisenant had doubled in two teammates for go-ahead scores, he rescued his team from a two-on, no-out situation in the bottom of the sixth when he robbed Vaquero’s Orlando Diaz on a line drive and promptly ran to second to double off a runner for an unassisted double play.
Relief pitcher Frank Alsamman struck out the next batter and Crescenta Valley had itself an 8-6 win over Vaquero, forcing today’s if-necessary championship contest at 5 p.m. at Babe Herman Field.
“Jake has been coming up clutch the whole tournament,” said Crescenta Valley Coach John Giese of Whisenant, who went three for four at the plate with a double, a triple, four runs batted in and a run scored.
In all, Crescenta Valley tallied an impressive 12 hits, including a two-for-four day from Alsamman that included a solo home run in the top of the fifth.
“I was relatively happy with the offense,” Giese said. “The first time [we played, Vaquero] played very good defense and shut us down, so it was nice to see [CV] step it up, but, I think we can do better.”
Added Whisenant: “We can be even better.”
Giese’s squad, however, found itself down early after squandering a golden opportunity in the second.
Alsamman singled to start the second, but celebrated a bit early on a Jason Chang double that followed, as Alsamman began clapping for what looked like a home run, only to see it hit the fence. Alsamman was held to third, but would most assuredly make up for it later in the game. After an AJ Roa walk loaded the bases, Diaz was able to wiggle free of the jam. First, he notched a strikeout, then he induced a comebacker that he tossed to home for a force out and then Brian Erickson laced what looked to be a sharp single to center field only to have it pluck a teammate on the bases for the third out.
Vaquero then took a 2-0 lead on runs by Javier Hurtado and Justin Solano on the strength of three walks, a hit batter, an error and a multitude of passed balls and wild pitches.
The error bug struck Vaquero in the third, though, as Adrian Damla singled to start the inning and scored when Whisenant singled to center field and Vaquero followed with two errors on the play. Chang later singled in Max Meyer, who doubled, to go ahead, 3-2.
“They’re a tough team,” said Vaquero Coach Juan Piedra of CV. “They’re fighters and they’re not gonna give up easy.”
But Diaz, who had two hits, reached base on his team’s first hit of the day off Erickson in the third and later scored thanks to another error to make it 3-3.
Whisenant and Co. struck back immediately again, as Erickson and Damla notched two-out singles in the fourth and Whisenant tripled down the first-base line to score them for a 5-3 lead.
Alsamman, who tallied the save in relief, went yard in the fifth for a 6-3 lead.
But a David Piedra double and a Diaz triple in the fifth led to Vaquero cutting the score to 6-5. Solano scored his second run of the game on an Arturo Gonzalez single to center and the game was once again knotted, this time at 6.
Of course Whisenant settled all that.
Now, the teams will play the rubber match for a District 16 title and a Section 2 berth.
“The kids just gotta go out there and make plays,” Piedra said.
Added Giese, who got two hits from Damla and Chang: “We’re just gonna come back at them hard. ...They have a good team, so we’re not gonna take them lightly.”

Major Baseball Crescenta Valley 3 Burbank 5
Crescenta Valley returns tonight to play for the District 16th Championship, as Burbank forced them into an “if necessary game.  Crescenta Valley highlight missed by the Glendale News Press was Jacob Martinez double in the 5th.  For the details of the game click on their link below:

Baseball: Major All-Stars fall to Burbank, 5-3, forcing an if-necessary game.
By Charles Rich
Published: Last Updated Tuesday, July 14, 2009 10:32 AM PDT
NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Put those championship dreams on hold. The Crescenta Valley Major All-Stars baseball team didn’t play up to par, as it strayed from playing its customary solid defense and running the bases properly. Fortunately for Crescenta Valley, it will have one more opportunity to correct those mistakes.
Burbank pitcher Justin Lewis limited Crescenta Valley to five hits in Burbank’s 5-3 victory against Crescenta Valley on Monday night in the championship game of the District 16 Little League Major Baseball Tournament at Babe Herman Field.
Crescenta Valley and Burbank will meet in an if-necessary championship game at 7:30 p.m. today at Babe Herman Field with the winner moving on to the Section 2 Tournament this weekend.
Crescenta Valley had two runners in scoring position thrown out while attempting a comeback bid in the late innings. It also committed an uncharacteristic five errors.
“We were a little over aggressive on the bases and we made an unlikely five errors on the right side of the infield,” Crescenta Valley Coach Todd Erickson said. “We have to try to figure out [why that happened] and then come out with some good at-bats and pitchers [today].”
Burbank owned a 5-1 lead going into the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Lewis hit Anders Simmeth with a pitch and Kyle Tavizon singled to put runners on first and second before Will Lombardo hit a ground-rule double to right to score Simmeth to make it 5-2.
Lewis then uncorked a wild pitch to easily score Tavizon to make it 5-3. However, Lombardo tried to score as well, but was tagged out by catcher Tanner Whitlock. Kevin Hello then singled, but Zachary Burch hit into a force out to shortstop to close out the game.
“I think Lombardo had a sense that he could score,” said Erickson, whose team never led. “Our guys did a good job of trying to come back in the end.
“We are going to need a faster start. Hats off to Burbank. We couldn’t catch them.”
Burbank scored a pair of first-inning runs off Burch, who started the game for Crescenta Valley. Aidan Anding singled to lead off the game and moved to second on a fielder’s choice before coming around to score on a single by Lewis to make it 1-0. Connor Lockheimer drove in a run on a grounder to extend Burbank’s lead to 2-0.
Crescenta Valley, which topped Burbank, 5-4, in a winner’s bracket game Wednesday, sliced the lead in half on an opposite-filed home run to right by Christian Castaneda in the second.
Burbank responded with two run in the third to make it 4-1 before adding an insurance run in the fifth.
Erickson, who saw Jacob Martinez get caught in a rundown between third base and home in the fifth, said Crescenta Valley will need to fix a couple of things leading up to tonight’s game.
“We want to be able to stay aggressive,” said Erickson, whose team advanced to Monday’s game with a 12-0 win against Foothill on Friday at Montrose Park. “We also want to make sure that we come out smoking with the bats.”

July 12, 2009
Sunday turned out to be a Black Sunday, as all three Crescenta Valley Teams lost.
To close out the day the Crescenta Valley Junior baseball team
built an 11-2 lead, behind the strong pitching of Josh Jun and Ken Lim and the timely hitting of Michael Russo and Bryan Wang, going into the top of the sixth inning, but some shaky defensive lapses resulted in 11 unanswered runs over the last two frames and Jewel City/JWV's pitcher held the Crescenta Valley boys scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings to win the game 13-11.  CV gets another crack at Burbank at Scholl Canyon on Tuesday at 6:00 PM, in the second chance bracket.  The winner of the Burbank vs. Crescenta Valley contest will go on to face the Jewel City/JWV all-stars on Wednesday at 6:00 PM (again at Scholl Canyon) for the championship. 9/10 Baseball Crescenta Valley 13 Burbank 3 four innings
The CV 9-10 team came back strong to mercy Burbank in their fourth game at Babe Herman on Saturday.  Burbank went up 3-0 in the top of the first while CV struggled to throw strikes and Burbank had a couple good hits.  CV put Adrian Damla, the lefty from Trotta on the mound, he found the zone, and it was lights out after that.  CV scored 4 runs in the 1st, 6 in the 2nd, 2 in the third, and walked of in the fourth after a two run double by Jason Chang ended the game.  CV now faces Vaquero on Monday at 5:00 at Babe Herman for the final series of the tournament. Baseball: Lombardo, Dunning lead Major All-Stars to title contest.
By Charles Rich

MONTROSE — With sound pitching and a power-hitting lineup, the Crescenta Valley Major Baseball All-Star team liked its chances to reach the championship contest.
It used both facets to achieve that task.
Will Lombardo hit a pair of three-run home runs and Tanner Dunning pitched three scoreless innings to help propel Crescenta Valley to a 12-0 win against Foothill in a winner’s bracket contest of the District 16 Little League Major All-Star Tournament on Friday night at Montrose Park.
The game was called in the bottom of the fifth because of the 10-run mercy rule.
“We had a little bit of a struggle versus Burbank [in a second-round game Wednesday], but we got the butterflies out and were able to take our momentum into this game,” Crescenta Valley Coach Todd Erickson said. “Our bats came alive again and our defense was superb.
“Now, we’ve got two chances to win the championship.”
Crescenta Valley will face Foothill, Vaquero or Burbank in the title game at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Babe Herman Field. Foothill will face Burbank or Vaquero in an elimination contest at 7:30 p.m. today at Babe Herman Field.
Dunning allowed one hit and struck out two to pick up the victory. Reliever Christian Castaneda yielded two hits and struck out two.
“Dunning set the tone because he locates the ball and does what we say,” said Erickson, whose team finished with 13 hits. “He’s got control of his curve and fastball.”
Crescenta Valley scored three runs in the bottom of the second with Dunning, Nathan Cook and Kyle Tavizon each driving in one run. Dunning had a run-scoring double in the third to make it 6-0. Lombardo hit his home runs in the fourth and fifth to complete the scoring.
“That’s a typical CV All-Star team,” Foothill Coach Rick Dickerson said. “They’ve got good hitting and good pitching.
“We didn’t hit the ball well today. We started out that way in our first game, but we were able to get on track. We couldn’t put two hits together. We’ve still got another game, and we want to get back and face CV again Monday.”
Tavizon, Lombardo, Kevin Hello and Dunning each contributed a pair of hits for Crescenta Valley. Stuart Maxwell, Jonathan Rios and Adam Arzoumanian had one hit apiece for Foothill.

9/10 Baseball Crescenta Valley lost to Vaquero 2 to 3
The CV 9-10 team dropped a heartbreaker by letting 3 unearned runs score in the first inning.  The bats went silent and the kids only earned back 2.  Final score 3-2.  Chase Sanford, Robert Giese, and Max Meyer handled pitching responsibilities.  The boys will drop down to the losers bracket and play again on Saturday at 5:00 a Babe Herman.

SOUTHWEST GLENDALE — Even though the Vaquero All-Stars were shut out over the final four frames of Friday evening’s District 16 9-10 Baseball All-Star Tournament semifinal, Vaquero Coach Juan Piedra insisted the pressure was concentrated on their opponent, the Crescenta Valley All-Stars.
That was largely because of the fact that Vaquero took a three-run lead in the first inning, a margin that was narrowed down to one over the course of the game, but held up nonetheless for a 3-2 victory at Babe Herman Field.
“The pressure was more on them to beat us because we’re the underdogs here,” said Piedra, whose team will meet the winner of a 5 p.m. Saturday loser’s bracket game between Crescenta Valley and either Burbank or Tujunga in the championship game at 5 p.m. on Monday at Babe Herman. “We just wanted to take until we got the first strike and move on from there.”
That approach gave Vaquero enough runs to win the game, as Crescenta Valley walked the bases loaded in the bottom of the first and then proceeded to walk in Daniel Gonzalez, David Piedra and Orlando Diaz.
Gio Ceballos earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits in five innings.
There were certainly moments when the pressure seemed to mount on Vaquero, though, as in the top of the sixth, when reliever David Piedra found himself in rocky save situation.
Chuck Weinmann led off the inning for Crescenta Valley with a double to left field and took third on a passed ball. Next batter AJ Roa bounced softly back to Piedra, who was unable to make a throw to first after bluffing Weinmann back to third.
The mounting crisis was defused in the blink of an eye when Jake Whisenant lined sharply back to Piedra, who snared the ball and threw Weinmann out at third for the second out.
The tying run remained at second base with two outs, but Piedra closed the door with a strikeout.
“There’s not much you can say about that,” said Crescenta Valley Coach John Geise, whose team has a chance to play its way back into the championship game with a win today. “They played some really tough defense and they were better than us today.
“We expect to see them on Monday.”
Crescenta Valley pulled to within 3-1 in the top of the third inning, when Adrian Damla swatted a leadoff double, took third on a wild pitch and scored on another wild delivery.
Damla then led off the fifth with an inside-the-park home run down the first-base line to pull Crescenta Valley to within 3-2.

Crescenta Valley cruises ahead
Baseball: All-Star squad on to next round of District 16 tournament after Tyler’s shutout.

TUJUNGA — Crescenta Valley All-Stars pitcher Jonathan Tyler kept Thursday’s opening-round game of the District 16 10-11 Baseball All-Star Tournament moving at a remarkably efficient pace.
The right-hander cruised through six innings on just 63 pitches to record a six-hit shutout and, as a result, his team is moving on to the second round of the winner’s bracket after controlling Tujunga, 6-0, at Tujunga Little League Fields.
“I just wanted to get my team the win,” said Tyler, who struck out five, walked none and also went three for four with two runs batted in. “I felt great today and I just felt like I was in control of all of my pitches.”
Tyler took the mound in the bottom of the first inning with a 2-0 lead in hand, thanks to a two-run home run by the second batter of the game, Greg Stupakis.
Stupakis’ straight shot to deep center field scored Andres Kim, who doubled to lead off the inning, which was one of four hits in Crescenta Valley’s first inning.
The only real tests for Tyler came in the first and second innings. Tujunga put runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the first on a single by Joey McClure and a double by Scottie McCutcheon, but Tyler induced the second out in the form of a popup to shortstop and struck out the next batter on three pitches.
In the bottom of the second, a two-out bunt single by Mallon Rizo put runners at first and second for Tujunga, but Tyler got the next batter to ground out to short. First-pitch outs were a big key for Tyler, as he recorded six of them in the game.
“Before the game, we went over the fact that we couldn’t walk anybody,” said Crescenta Valley Coach Tony Tellache, whose squad will play Burbank at 9 a.m. Saturday at Tujunga. “If we don’t walk anybody, we know our defense and our bats are gonna come alive and that’s exactly what happened.
“I’m really proud of them. They’ve worked really hard these last few weeks and the results are showing.”
The lead grew in the top of the third when Tyler singled to left field to plate Stupakis for the first of two runs, and again in the fourth, when Crescenta Valley added another run.
Colin Davidson led off the frame with a single and, with one out, Tujunga loaded the bases by issuing back-to-back walks. Tyler came up clutch at the plate again, driving in Travis Westhoff with an infield single.
Robert McNelis scored from third base on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth to give Tyler a six-run lead to work with six outs to go. It was far more than Tyler would need, as he was in his best form in the late innings.
Tyler, who allowed only two hits after the second inning, breezed through the fifth on just four pitches and worked around a leadoff bloop in the sixth to retire the side on his next nine pitches, including a pair of strikeouts.
“[We played] quality baseball with good defense, good defense is what we believe wins games,” Tellache said. “We know we have the bats to put runs on the board if we can make sure we get our outs.
“We try and take the pressure off our pitchers, let them throw strikes, and once he gets in a groove it’s kind of lights out for some of them.”

July 8, 2009 Crescenta Valley goes four for four with wins in the 9/10 (2), Junior, and Major Baseball.
The Crescenta Valley Junior Baseball Team won tonight 9-5 against Burbank.  It was a close back and forth game, going into the 6th inning tied 5-5.  Crescenta Valley was able to outlast Burbank’s pitching and get to them in the 6th for 4 runs.  Teddy Boeke pitched the first three innings, then he was relieved by Brian Wang who threw 4 innings of shut out baseball.  Crescenta Valley will next play Glendale on Sunday. (Larry Fitzgibbons) See the Glendale News Press write-up below:

NORTHEAST GLENDALE — To be considered an all-star, one must be adept at accepting responsibility and carefully following instructions.
As far as Crescenta Valley Junior All-Star Baseball Coach Larry Fitzgibbons is concerned, that’s where it must start and end.
“It’s going to come down to [the players] knowing their responsibilities and then being able to execute,” said Fitzgibbons, whose team scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 9-5 victory against Burbank on Wednesday night in an opening-round game of the District 16 Little League Junior All-Star Tournament at Scholl Canyon Ball Fields. “We preach execution and them knowing the situations they are in.
“This win is critical because we had to get through a team that’s well-coached.”
Crescenta Valley, which will next compete in a winner’s-bracket game against Jewel City/Jewish War Veterans at 4 p.m. Sunday at Dunsmore Park, got a clutch two-run single in the sixth from third baseman Christofher Rivera to give it an 8-5 lead. Burbank, which will meet the loser of the Crescenta Valley-Jewel City/Jewish War Veterans contest in an elimination game in the three-team tournament at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Scholl Canyon Ball Fields, went down in order in the seventh.
Rivera said every detail in a game can be important.
“If you don’t listen or pay attention, then it can cost you runs and the game,” said Rivera, who had three singles and scored a pair of runs. “I think my hit [in the sixth] relaxed our team, and it helped us a lot.
“Now, we get to rest and we know that we get to play at least two more games.”
Crescenta Valley took a 6-5 lead on a game-winning fielder’s choice by Nolan Rea. Rivera made it 8-5 before Josh Jun closed out the scoring with a run-scoring single.
“I think we wore down their pitchers, and we were able to keep our head above water,” said Fitzgibbons, who got two hits from Bryan Hong-Tsai Wang and one from Ken Lim. “We played a little small ball [in the sixth] and manufactured runs.”
Crescenta Valley starting pitcher Ted Boeke and Hong-Tsai Wang combined to limit Burbank to five hits. Burbank didn’t record a hit in the last three innings.
Crescenta Valley built a 4-1 lead in the second, which included runs batted in by Joe Torres and Hong-Tsai Wang, while Christian Rivera stole home on a double steal.
Burbank scored four runs in the third to take a 5-4 lead.

Burbank vs Crescenta Valley 11/12 year old All Stars starts out with a bang !

In the first, Crescenta Valley took the field as the home team, with Kevin Hello starting on the mound.  Burbank came out swinging which led to a 1-0 score at the end of the top of the first inning.  Crescenta Valley’s offense was not to be shaken and the first 4 batters Anders Simmeth, Kyle Tavizon, Kevin Hello and Will Lomabardo all got hits leading to a 2-1 lead by the 3rd.  However, Burbank would not go away and chipped away at Crescenta Valley tieing the score 2-2 then 4-4 throughout the game. Getting the bat on the ball throughout the game included Nathan Cook, Christian Castaneda, Mike, Jack and Joe Reilly, Kevin Hello, and Johnny Alvarado. In the sixth Crescenta Valley was shut down by the starting Burbank Pitcher and 2 runners were left stranded on base.  With tournament play there is no time limit, so the 6th ended in a tie 4-4, on to the 7 inning.  Crescenta Valley’s Kyle Tavizon came in a couple innings prior and shut the Burbank All star Team down in the top of the 7th, giving Crescenta Valley one last chance as the home team to get a winning run.  In a dramatic show of offensive batting Will Lombardo doubled to center, Zachary Burch grounded to first for an out, but moving Lombardo to third.  Jacob Martinez, bottom of the 7th inning, single to the right center gap sealed the victory for Crescenta Valley as Lombardo sauntered home for a much celebrated win. In the first game of the 9-10 baseball tournament, the Crescenta Valley’s boys started out strong with a hitting juggernaut and never looked back.  Three unanswered runs in the first inning followed by 2 in the second, then the battle began.  10 of 13 players ended the game with a 1.000 contact percentage with the others not far behind.  Pitching was handled by Robert Giese, Max Meyer and Jason Chang.  Tujunga played a good game, but in the end could not match the offensive onslaught of Crescenta Valley with the final score being 14-6.

In their second game of the 9-10 baseball tournament, the Crescenta Valley’s boys continued their offensive onslaught.  Pitching was by Brian Erickson, who came within one batter of a no hitter and threw the biggest curveball (for a SOL) anyone has seen from a 10 year old in a long time, eliciting gasps and cheers from the crowd on both sides when it was thrown… (the last guy was struck out by Frank “The Tank” Alsamman).  The Crescenta Valley’s boys Merced Jewel City/JVC after 4 innings by once again batting around the order more or less with impunity.   Their next game is Friday at 5:00 at Babe Herman (John Giese).
