Crescenta Valley gave up 13 runs before Crescenta Valley even batted in the first inning. Crescenta Valley could have had our players all sit in chairs and they would have made more plays. After they scored 11 runs, I brought in Paige Baker who did an excellent job throwing drop pitches to a great fastball hitting team. We actually outscored Quartz Hill after the 13 run debacle. Aprylle Salvador and Summer Solomon both had bunt basehits. Izzy Hernandez had a nice hit as well. By Gabriel Rizk Published: Last Updated Thursday, July 16, 2009 10:52 PM PDT NORTHEAST GLENDALE — For the Crescenta Valley Junior Softball team, half the battle for the 2009 District 16 Championship and the right to move on to the Section 2 playoffs was won on Wednesday night, when Crescenta Valley beat Burbank and forced it to return to Scholl Canyon Ball Fields for a winner-take-all “if necessary” game on Thursday. But the task of beating Burbank for a second straight night remained and, on this night, Crescenta Valley simply wasn’t up to the challenge. Whether it was running its small-ball game to perfection, taking advantage of Crescenta Valley miscues or coming up with timely hits, Burbank found ways to score runs, prolonging its season with a 13-3 victory. “I needed to get back to some basic softball — small ball, running and being the aggressor,” said Burbank Coach Albert Hernandez, whose team lost, 4-3, in their first chance to clinch the title on Wednesday. “We’ve stayed away from that for too long. I asked for it and they gave it to me. “You can’t take anything away from CV because they came to play and they wanted it bad.” Burbank never trailed after taking an early four-run lead behind a solid effort in the circle from Katie Hooper, who went 4 1/3 innings before being relieved by Catie Guthry. Burbank attempted seven bunts in the top of the first inning, getting three of them down in pivotal situations. Allie Grimaldo moved Laina Do to second base with a bunt that trickled into left field and both runners moved into scoring position on an error on the play. The next batter, Hooper, singled to left field to score Do and Grimaldo came home as well on a throwing error for a 3-0 lead. Burbank then made it 4-0, moving Hooper to third base on a bunt by Jess Loya that turned into a base hit when no one covered first base, before plating Hooper on a sacrifice bunt by Molly Holt. “We knew we would have to play a perfect game and we didn’t,” Crescenta Valley Coach Chris Sanford said. “You’ve gotta hand it to Burbank, they came ready to play and we made our boo-boos.” Before Burbank added on five runs in the top of the seventh, its lead remained in the range of four runs throughout, but Crescenta Valley experienced some bad breaks on the base paths every time it was in position to rally. Trailing, 5-1, in the bottom of the third inning, Crescenta Valley had the bases loaded with one out after Amber Alsamman had singled with the sacks full to drive in the team’s first run. The runner on third base broke for home when Burbank’s catcher attempted a pickoff at first base after a pitch. The lead runner was put out in a rundown between third base and home and the double play was completed when the next runner was also caught in a pickle between second and third. Burbank extended its lead to 6-1 in the top of the fourth on an RBI double by Hooper, but Crescenta Valley bounced back to cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom half on a single by Brady Sanford that scored Katie Benson. But the final out of the frame was made at the plate when a Crescenta Valley runner tried to score from second base on a single to right field. Crescenta Valley cut the lead to three in the bottom of the fifth inning, but would get no closer after Burbank answered with two in the top of the sixth. With the Junior Softball’s team lost that brings to an end the District 16 Tournaments. Crescenta Valley teams had 14 wins and 10 losses, however 3 teams played in the Championship games and 3 teams played in if necessary games. To those teams that are going to the sectionals, good luck, and to you who are not have a safe and wonder summer. Don’t forget about fall ball and will see you in the spring. (whp) July 15, 2009 Junior Softball Crescenta Valley 4 Burbank 3 Crescenta Valley again won the coin toss and contrary to everyone elses belief, I still enjoy being the home team. Crescenta Valley got them 123, then scored 3. The next inning they got one across. They got us 1.2.3. and pretty much went back and forth each team throwing down one more run apiece. Meghan Spencer pitched the whole game tonight doing an outstanding performance and only walking 3 all night. Going into the 7th inning it was 4-2 Crescenta Valley, we were just 3 outs away. We got the first out on a grounder. The second gal got on with a base hit. They bunted her over to second and we threw the bunter out at 1st for the second out. Their 4th batter drove in a run on a nice double making the score 4-3. We signaled the pitcher to throw nothing but curves to next the batter who promptly popped the third and final out to Joelle Martinez, playing 2nd the final blow and CV win. 4-3 over Burbank. (Chris Stanford) CV quiets Burbank bats in win Softball: One day after suffering 16-6 loss, Crescenta Valley forces “if necessary” game. By Gabriel Rizk Published: Last Updated Wednesday, July 15, 2009 10:34 PM PDT NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Crescenta Valley Junior Softball Coach Chris Sanford said his team hasn’t had much time to build onfield chemistry since the District 16 Championship Tournament began. But things had clearly started to jell for CV on Wednesday at Scholl Canyon Ball Fields, when it held a powerful Burbank team that had defeated it by 10 runs on Tuesday to just three runs, winning, 4-3, to force a winner-take-all rematch tonight. “Tonight all the girls started playing as a unit and all the dumb-dumb plays — the shot nerves, running into each other on called balls, watching third strikes — that was out of their system and they came focused, ready to play,” Sanford said. “I believe in this team and they have so much talent. “I know we basically woke up a sleeping bear and Burbank’s gonna come ready to play [tonight]. All season long, they’ve given us nothing but their ‘A’ game.” The third meeting between the two squads in as many days will take place at 6 p.m. at Scholl Canyon with the winner advancing to the Section 2 Tournament. “We’ve got to wake our bats back up the way we did [on Tuesday],” said Burbank Coach Albert Hernandez, whose team never caught up after falling behind, 3-0, in the bottom of the first inning. “I think the girls’ stomachs were knotted. There were so many good pitches that we should have had better hits or more runners on base and they just faltered. “Hopefully, tomorrow it will be a lot better.” Crescenta Valley pitcher Meghan Spencer tossed an eight-hit complete game, which took on added pressure in the top of the seventh amid a strong Burbank rally. With her team trailing, 4-2, Allie Grimaldo singled to right field with one out and advanced to second base on a groundout. She scored to make it 4-3 on consecutive wild pitches to Ashley Russo, who singled on a full-count to start the rally anew. Jessica Sanchez blooped a single just over the shortstop’s glove to extend the game before Spencer got the next batter to pop up high above second base for the final out. “I can’t speak enough about Meghan,” Sanford said of Spencer, who allowed just one hit — an infield single — from the third through sixth inning, retiring the side in the sixth in three pitches. “She had nerves of steel and she buckled down with the other team screaming in her ear. “Bottom line, she focused and she was in her zone.” Crescenta Valley broke through for three runs in the first inning against Burbank starter Russo, who allowed only two hits thereafter and went six strong innings. Torrey Johnson doubled in Brady Sanford, who walked, and Spencer doubled in Johnson and Skeeter Morena, who also walked, two batters later. Burbank answered with a run in the top of the second, courtesy of a groundout by Laina Do that plated Molly Holt, and inched closer in the fourth with an Anissa Garcia sacrifice bunt scored Jess Loya to make it 3-2. Crescenta Valley added a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the fourth, though, on a double by Amber Alsamman scoring Spencer. July 14, 2009 Junior Softball Crescenta Valley 6 Burbank 16 Crescenta Valley fell behind early and tried to come back with 6 runs in the 4th but failed to close with-in 10 runs and the game was called. Both teams return tonight to do it all over again, But this time its CV’s turn. (whp) Last night Crescenta Valley got smoked by Burbank 16-6 at the bottom of 5. We started out with some errors leaving us 3-1 at the bottom of one and went down hill from there. All of our hits went straight to their players and all of their s found the holes. We also could not get out of an inning if we tried having 2 outs seems to be the Achilles heal of the Crescenta Valley JR's this year. At any rate coming out of the top of 5 we were home facing a 16-1 score before we hit. We put forth a late rally scoring five but came up short. The good news is that we were able to see hoe the team played as a whole, since this was our forst scrimmage as a team. I made the adjustments to the positions as well as batting order, did some shaking up, and had a great talk with the girls tonight. We highlighted the positives, i.e. scored 5 in an inning, went 123 on D, and went to work tonight. (Chris Stanford) July 12, 2009 Sunday turned out to be a Black Sunday, as all three Crescenta Valley Teams lost. First the 9/10 softball team just could not get it started in the two game against Foothill, losing the second game by a score of 12 to 1, with Foothill winning the District 16 Championship. By Gabriel Rizk Published: Last Updated Monday, July 13, 2009 1:36 PM PDT NORTHEAST GLENDALE — In beating Crescenta Valley, 12-1, in Sunday’s District 16 9-10 Softball Championships title game at Scholl Canyon Ball Fields, Foothill showed it can keep control of a tight game, as well as put up a big inning offensively. Led by five strong innings in the circle from pitcher Jordan Lousararian, Foothill took a first-inning lead, which it protected over the next four with a series of solid defensive plays. Any thought of a Crescenta Valley comeback was suppressed in the top of the fifth, when Foothill took advantage of walks, wildness and a couple of fielding errors to post eight runs and put the five-inning mercy rule into effect. “CV played us tight, they just had one blow-up inning in the fifth,” Foothill Coach Todd Fabian said. “I’m just so proud of these girls. They’ve been working hard for three weeks and it shows. “Our fielding was fantastic. ...Jordan just pitched a magnificent game.” Tiffany Bartamanian singled in Foothill’s 11th and 12th runs to cap the scoring spree in a fifth inning that saw 13 batters come to the plate, but for much of the game, Foothill had to protect a more modest lead. Alex Harvard’s one-out single started things off for Foothill in the top of the first. Courtesy runner Miya Legaspi and Lousararian, who drew a walk, both scored when Alley Johnson’s sharp ground ball got through the infield and rolled all the way to the outfield fence. In the top of the second inning, Foothill increased its lead to 3-0 on Arianna Campbell’s groundout that scored Bartamanian and to 4-0 on Samantha Fabian’s run-scoring single to plate Claire Smith three batters later. Crescenta Valley closed the gap to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning when Jessica Yzagguirre scored on an error after reaching base on an infield single. But, as it did in the third inning, as well, Crescenta Valley left a valuable potential run stranded at third base to end the frame. None of it would matter in by the end of the next half inning, however, after Foothill scored five runs on either wild pitches or passed balls and another on a fielding error. Lousararian finished the complete game, facing four in the bottom of the fifth. “I couldn’t pull her out,” Fabian said of Lousararian, who allowed just three hits and struck out five. “She was just on and she couldn’t miss.” Foothill will now move on to the Section 2 playoffs beginning this week. “We’re looking forward to that,” Fabian said. “We’re hoping to keep it going.” Then the Major Softball team lost again to Burbank, a strong team that Crescenta Valley had a hard time with all year. This final game start off great for Crescenta Valley as they scored 6 runs in the first inning, but a strong Burbank came back won the game 8 to 6 for the District 16 Championship. By Jeff Tully Published: Last Updated Tuesday, July 14, 2009 10:30 PM PDT GLENDALE — The Burbank All-Stars didn’t do themselves any favors in the first inning of their District 16 Major Softball Tournament championship game. The locals committed three errors and allowed one walk, opening the door for Crescenta Valley, which was able to push across six runs before Burbank could record its first out. However, undaunted by the early deficit, Burbank battled back, whittling away at the lead through the next three innings, while keeping Crescenta Valley from scoring any more runs. The locals took the lead with a run in the fourth inning, and then tacked on another in the fifth, to complete the improbable 8-6 come-from-behind victory. “We came out and we didn’t look good at all that first inning,” Burbank Coach Bruce DelCastillo said “We told them that they were going to have to go out and battle every inning, and that’s what they did.” Burbank scored two runs in the first inning, one in the second and three in the third to tie the score at 6. Delaney Nicol led the way, going two for two. Ashley Linda, Bridgette Pisa, Ashton Akins and Davina DelCastillo had one hit and a run batted in each. Tori Talavera, Kayla Dighero and Rachel Bartamian had hits. In the circle, Jade Teesel and DelCastillo combined on the effort. The team will begin sectional play Thursday in Lancaster. By Grant Gordon Published: Last Updated Thursday, July 9, 2009 10:33 PM PDT NORTHEAST GLENDALE — Despite a somewhat shaky start in the field, Crescenta Valley’s Major Softball team had more than enough firepower at the plate to erase any first-inning ills. Having spotted Tujunga a one-run lead in the top of the first, Crescenta Valley wasted no time in answering with 10 runs over the next two innings en route to a 13-9 win in the opening game of the District 16 Major Softball tournament on Thursday evening at the Scholl Canyon Ballfields. Catcher Tiffany Brisco went four for four with three runs and a run batted in to lead a Crescenta Valley 10-hit attack that saw seven players notch hits and 10 either score a run or knock one in. “We have emphasized the team aspect and the girls have bought into it,” said Crescenta Valley Coach Ken Green, whose team will face Burbank at 6 p.m. today at Scholl. “I’m very pleased with the team effort.” Tujunga took a precarious 1-0 lead in the opening inning when it loaded the bases with three singles, two of them bloopers to center and one that likely should’ve been caught. But Crescenta Valley and starting pitcher Olivia Thayer, having emerged from a one-out, bases-loaded situation with only one run scored, limited the damage. “They didn’t fall apart, they kept on going,” said Brisco of her teammates. “It was really fun how all of us were a team.” A one-out Brisco single in the bottom of the first was mishandled in the outfield, allowing Courtney Ianello and Thayer to score, leading to a three-run CV first. But the real onslaught came in a seven-run second. A line-drive triple by Melanie Abzyn began the stanza in which the first six Crescenta Valley batters reached base. The first out came on an infield fly, but even still, it was dropped, and Thayer raced home to make it 7-1. The biggest hit came later when Adella Alatraca singled home both Faith Rousey and Marissa Cornelius. Back-to-back doubles by Brisco and Cornelius added up to a 12-3 advantage in the third. “I liked the way I hit and I was proud of my team,” Brisco said. Tujunga drew within 12-7 with a four-run outburst in the fourth, but Crescenta Valley stayed in control throughout. Thayer added her team’s last run when she blistered a shot to right that got by the outfielder and was then booted again by the shortstop, allowing Thayer to race all the way around for a four-base error. Thayer, who worked just two innings in her start, retiring the last five batters she faced, scored three runs and walked twice. Crescenta Valley finds itself faced with a Burbank team seen by many as the favorite in the three-team tournament. But Green was quick to compliment Tujunga and add that he’s pleased with Thursday’s contest allowing his team to gain some valued momentum. “[Tujunga] made us make plays,” he said. “We got the nervousness out and I think that sets us up for [today] against Burbank. “We’re pleased with this victory.”
